Week 33 - Last cast always matters
A new week brought new guests to Kengis Bruk, each arriving with their own expectations, experience and hopes of meeting one of the big Baltic.
The good fishing from the previous week continued, although the river still demanded patience. The first days were quiet at times, but as the week progressed, the fishing became increasingly better. It was another reminder of something every salmon angler eventually learns: the last cast matters.
You never truly know which cast will bring the moment you have been waiting for. It can happen early in the morning, late in the evening or just as you are preparing to leave the river. During Week 33, some of the best fishing came towards the end of the week. The guests who remained patient and continued believing in the next cast were rewarded.
But when the opportunity finally comes, everything needs to work.
Salmon fishing requires good equipment. A weak knot, a damaged leader or a small problem with the reel can be enough to lose the fish of the week. These details may seem insignificant while standing beside the river, but the moment a salmon takes the fly, even the smallest weakness can become the difference between landing a fish and watching it disappear.
Checking the tackle is therefore not simply preparation – it is part of the fishing. Knots, hooks, leaders and connections should all be inspected regularly. You might only get one real opportunity, and when it arrives, the gear and you must be ready.
Away from fishing, life beside the river continued in the familiar Kengis way. New guests became part of the group, stories were exchanged and quiet moments were shared by the fire. The conversations, laughter and time spent together remained just as important as the hours spent casting.
Week 33 continued the positive trend from the week before. The fishing improved as the days passed, new memories were made and the river once again rewarded patience.
Because in salmon fishing, it is never over until the last cast.
Tight lines!
